20 Worst Movies Of 2016

Why would anyone need a follow-up to Independence Day? It would surely require such a daft level of escalation that there would be no possible way the humans could survive again - especially not Judd Hirsch. They'd have to bring in some sort of ludicrous plot contrivance like an iPod alien with higher sentience and the key to beating the bad guy aliens within in or something... Which is exactly what they did.

The result is possibly the most numb-headed sci-fi of all time, which has the kind of swagger that truly unself-aware idiots have about them. It seems to think it's both incredibly clever and hilarious, and it is neither. But there is at least some charm to how awful it is.

Unlike everything else on this list, Independence Day: Resurgence is like a delightful idiot - the welcome kind that is almost charming enough to get away with the fact that if it was human it would eat house bricks. It's absolutely bonkers, setting up a sub-Starship Troopers sequel with such bold confidence that it's almost a shame that no-one could possibly ever be dumb enough to option it.
