20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)
6. Smurfs: The Lost Village
Did anyone really need another Smurfs movie? Well, kids who don't really ask for much from their school holiday watching maybe, but precious few other people.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the reboot to the animated series that previously pulled in more than $800m was a bland offering that failed to live up to the expectations established by Sony's previous two mediocre live action mixes. The fact that it's a reboot just four years after The Smurfs 2 says everything you need to know about the studio's rather cynical attempt to cash in on the characters.
Compared to the better animated movies - which is inevitable - The Lost Village lacks nuance and substance, and that added texture that invites adult fans to love it too. Sure, it made enough money, but it's mind-numbingly unrewarding and repetitive, and it basically feels like a cinematic babysitter you'd stick on if you didn't actually like your kids that much.
