20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)

7. Eloise

Eloise Movie
Vertical Entertainment

We are in something of a boom period for horror movies, with mainstream box office successes of franchises like Insidious and The Conjuring inspiring more traditionalist spook-stories like The Babadook, Lights Out and It Comes At Night.

Unfortunately, despite those successes, there's still a significant number of horror film-makers who simply aren't up to the task of making compelling, exciting thrillers despite their glossier aspirations. And that includes special effects veteran Robert Legato, who worked on The Jungle Book, Titanic and Avatar (among many others). Clearly what's good for great effects is not good for strong story-telling.

Eloise is a bland, cliched mess that takes its haunted asylum concept and fudges it so horribly that it might as well have been set anywhere else. It's an identikit, boring "who dies next" killer, with idiotic, impossible to like characters (not helped by almost universally poor performances) and painfully few moments of real impact.
