20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)

2017 early summer was supposed to be a nostalgic's playground, with both Baywatch and CHiPS being given modern updates with at least one great lead and one slightly more divisive one in both cases.

Unfortunately, like The Rock's Baywatch disaster, CHiPS is also a bust, and can't trade on Johnson's charisma to squeeze out a few tepid smiles. The film - which positions itself as an uproarious buddy cop flick - is painfully unfunny in a way that is almost obnoxious.

Like Baywatch, CHiPS fundamentally misreads what made the source successful: it wasn't an R-rated bro-fest, vulgar and muscle-bound - it was innocent and surprisingly sweet. The way to have made it work was copying the 21 Jump Street model, but the simple fact is that there isn't the same intelligence in film-making behind it to capture the same sort of charm. And Dax Shepard is about as close to a Channing Tatum stand-in as Rosie O'Donnell would be.
