20 Worst Movies Of 2017

9. Eloise

Eloise Movie
Vertical Entertainment

There have been some great horror movies in the past couple of years and this year crowned the lot with the exceptional Get Out. At the other end of the scale, though, came this insipid affair proving that there are still lots of horror film-makers who simply aren't up to the job, even with aspirations of slightly higher production values.

Even special effects veteran Robert Legato, who worked on The Jungle Book, Titanic and Avatar (among many others) struggled in that respect, and if you're looking for evidence to suggest that good effects makers don't necessarily make good film-makers, look no further than Eloise.

This dull, cliched mess centres on its haunted asylum concept that should have been worth a few good scares (though the continued stigmatism of mental health in horror movies isn't great) but which fudges everything so horribly that it might as well have been set anywhere else.

It's rote and boring and none of the characters are even remotely likeable nor any intended scares successful.
