3. The Emoji Movie

When it was announced there was going to be a LEGO movie, people raised their eyebrows cynically at the very idea. Surely that would never work and the audiences would see through such an obvious cash-grab? Well, no, because The LEGO Movie was great and wasn't a cash-grab at all. It's just a shame that it inspired Hollywood think-tanks to look at other non-typical story sources for cash-grab inspiration.

And lo, there came The Emoji Movie, which was never going to be as good at expressing emotions as Inside Out and which was exactly as cynically targeted as it looked from the outset. It needed to be as smart and subversive as Sausage Party or The LEGO Movie, but it was about as subtle as a brick. Or a talking poop emoji.

It's no more than an insult to the intelligence of the demographic it aimed to delight. And in the end, the most succinct and appropriate review of The Emoji Movie comes in the shape of one of its own star characters. Poop emoji, indeed.
