20 Worst Movies Of 2019
10. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
With Disney’s purchase of X-Men hanging over writer/director Simon Kinberg’s head, Dark Phoenix must have been a difficult movie to make. Unfortunately, that difficulty was visible in every single frame, as the movie imploded into disaster. Frankly, the FoX-Men deserved a much better ending than this.
It’s the second time they’ve had a go at the Dark Phoenix storyline, and the second time they’ve botched it. Kinberg had some fantastic character actors at his disposal and a chance to do something fresh with relatively low risks and potentially huge returns. Instead, he went for X-Men’s most beloved story, rushed through it (yet somehow made it drag on) and tasked Sophie Turner with carrying the film, totally wasting Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy’s talents.
We barely know this version of Jean Grey, or her closest allies, but they’re trusted with a major story they can’t carry. Keeping Quicksilver on the sidelines because he’d been made too overpowered was just straight up fan disservice and bad storytelling too. A shame it had to end like this.
