20 Worst Movies Of 2019
18. Serenity
Matthew McConaughey and Anna Hathaway made their name in popcorn filler, before ascending to serious Oscar winners in dramatic roles. With Serenity though, both of them appeared to back pedal. Not in that the film was the goofy romcom type which made the pair famous (it’s actually a dark thriller which takes itself incredibly seriously), but in how far off their trajectory it shunts them. Hathaway’s career has been somewhat chaotic post Les Miserables anyway, but McConaughey did appear to have left the bombs behind.
Serenity revolves around a woman (Hathaway) begging her ex husband (McConaughey) to murder her current, abusive husband. There’s potential in the story, but it takes itself far too seriously. Considering the pulpy premise, plus the incredibly weird video game twist, this film might have been a guilty pleasure contender.
Instead of going for the Crank/Bad Boys style tone though, any sense of fun or humour is sapped out in exchange for turgid dialogue and stony faces. The movie rarely makes any attempt to explain things, and rather than leave you on the edge of your seat, it just leaves you confused and bored.
