20 Worst Performances In MCU Movies
19. Cate Blanchett
Character: Hela
Appeared In: Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Cate Blanchett is a fantastic actress and this isn't her fault - she definitely has a bit of fun with the character. Her performance isn't the worst, but is it scary or particularly interesting? Not really.
This one comes down more to weak writing than anything else. Thor: Ragnarok is a comedy and that was prioritized over the action or pathos; Hela was definitely a casualty of this. Blanchett is occasionally amusing but she doesn't mix being funny and being scary like Tom Hiddleston does so brilliantly with Loki and she never feels like a legitimate threat. Alas, the MCU's first female villain to be the main antagonist of the movie is just another silly Marvel bad guy and a waste of Cate Blanchett's enormous talents.
Blanchett is not the kind of actress who is suited to this kind of hammy, over-the-top villain and this is one of the very few times casting her in a film has been a mistake. But hey, at least she's better in this movie than she was in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
