Mickey Rourke would be happy with this placement, as he absolutely hated working with Marvel. He put a lot of effort into making an interesting villain and did some method acting, but sadly it seems most of his efforts were left out of the film. Rourke felt his character was just reduced to a one-dimensional villain and has said he will never work with Marvel Studios again.

This explanation makes sense when watching the film. Throughout, it's evident Mickey Rourke is trying his best but given the poor script and lack of screen-time, Whiplash ends up being one of the worst missed opportunities the studio has ever had. They had an actor who was really trying to make the character work yet they didn't let him do anything.

The fragments of Whiplash that are left in the film aren't great, with Rourke's performance coming down to a Russian accent and nothing else. Iron Man 2 was a huge disappointment and a major early stumble for the franchise, so it's likely Mickey Rourke isn't the only actor unhappy with how things turned out.
