As young Max (Emjay Anthony) comes to realise that the arrival of the monstrous Krampus is a result of him angrily ripping up a letter he wrote to Santa, he begs Krampus to spare his family (who are already dead) and take him instead. Krampus then drops Max into a fiery pit to the Underworld, after which he wakes up on Christmas morning and the whole thing appears to have been a dream. It's all well and good until Max opens one of his presents: it's Krampus' bauble from earlier in the movie, causing the entire family to remember what they experienced, which was no dream. We then pan out to reveal that the family now exist within one of Krampus' snow globes, sat alongside numerous others who have been punished for their lack of Christmas spirit. Roll credits. Though the "it was only a dream" ending very nearly ruined the entire movie, this smart double-twist thankfully pulled it back, giving the big bad guy a satisfying victory at the same time.
