20 WTF Moments From Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

9. The Underwater Scene Is A Total Disappointment

Much hype surrounded one particular sequence in Rogue Nation, where Hunt has to enter an underwater "digital safety deposit box" to retrieve a trinket that serves a larger function later on in the narrative. Prior to release, Cruise sold the sequence on the strength of the fact that he trained to hold his breath for over 6 minutes for a sequence that reportedly had no cuts. Disappointing it is, then, that the final cut doesn't show much of this at all, constantly cutting between Hunt replacing the data profile and Benji entering the facility. Yes, there are a few instances where we see Cruise underwater for 30-60 seconds at a time, but considering how ecstatic Cruise seemed about an underwater scene with no cuts, it seems somewhat underwhelming by comparison. Plus, the images of Hunt underwater are clearly bathed in a lot of CGI (especially when Ilsa rescues him), so it undercuts the whole "this is practical" aspect.
