20 WTF Moments From Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

19. There's A Villain Called The Bone Doctor

If there's one consistent complaint about the M:I franchise, it's that the characters don't have a whole lot of, well, character. This holds particularly true for the villains, who have been a pretty forgettable bunch aside from Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian from the third film, though Rogue Nation does try to rectify this with somewhat mixed results. After Ethan is gassed in London by the film's main villain, Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), and brought to his lair, Hunt is met by Janik Vinter (Jens Hulten), a violent criminal who has earned a vicious nickname: "The Bone Doctor". He carries with him a set of torture instruments, establishing him as a force to be reckoned with and a potentially awesome henchman character. It's just a shame that he barely gets time to shine, being easily bested by Hunt and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) early on and again later in the movie. Even so, it's an amusingly eccentric (not to mention rare) choice for the M:I franchise to actually give a supporting villain a name, though giving him a little more of the spotlight, especially considering the rather minimalist main villain, may have been a good idea.
