20 WTF Moments From Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
14. The Ridiculously Generic Plot
In fairness, nobody expects narrative genius out of any Mission: Impossible film, but Ghost Protocol proved that it was possible to wrap riveting action around a relatively engrossing plot, no matter that the central villain was, well, pretty tedious. Rogue Nation sadly isn't quite so lucky, serving up a plot so predictably dull that you'll likely start forgetting it the second you leave the cinema. In essence, the Syndicate, led by Solomon Lane, is shown to be behind a number of world catastrophes as a means of "course-correcting" the world, but of course, they also love a little money too, and that's pretty much all you need to know. Anything else is window dressing, and the plot just revolves around teaming up with Ilsa (and then not) to secure the device which might lure Lane out into the open. On the other hand, it's still more interesting than M:I2.
