20 WTF Moments From Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
13. The Atrocious Fight Scene Editing
This is only director Christopher McQuarrie's third movie in 15 years, and sadly, it shows, because Rogue Nation is all over the place as far as its action aesthetic goes. Some scenes (namely the Vienna Opera scene and the riveting motorcycle chase) are superbly shot, while McQuarrie appears to have much more trouble with the close-quarters scenes. It's evident from early on when Ilsa helps Ethan escape from Lane's London hide-out: McQuarrie and editor Eddie Hamilton splice too many shots together, such that the result is both disorientating and annoying. If we can't figure out what's going on, how are we supposed to care? This carries through to all the fist-fights in the whole film: they're messily cobbled together for such an elaborate (not to mention expensive) production.
