The very first award of the night also delivered the first big shock, as the Best Supporting Actor (film) award went to Aaron Taylor-Johnson for his sublimely creepy work in Nocturnal Animals.

The smart money here was on Mahershala Ali for his widely-acclaimed performance in Moonlight, but as most of the night showed, the Holllywood Foreign Press Association didn't dole out much gold to Barry Jenkins' searing drama.

By comparison, Nocturnal Animals was broadly acclaimed but hadn't enjoyed much prior success on the awards circuit, and Taylor-Johnson's performance was a more low-flying turn that hadn't mounted a particularly vocal campaign.

While this likely won't have too much influence on the Oscars moving forward given the miniscule voter membership of the Globes, it was still an unexpected, left-field pick.
