2012 Films: Best And Worst Of The Year Awards

Most Disappointing Performance

WINNER: Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock) Casting Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock did not seem like a natural move, and the first trailer did little to alleviate my trepidations; under heavy make-up and wearing a fat suit, Hopkins still didn't particularly resemble The Master of Suspense, and frankly, his vocal performance seemed more like "Anthony Hopkins playing Anthony Hopkins playing Alfred Hitchcock" than anything. Never can we forget Hopkins' signature vocal register; he is never able to abandon it underneath Hitch, and as such the performance feels resolutely gimmicky, stifling the talented actor under overt make-up, and making us feel bad for Toby Jones, whose performance as Hitchcock in The Girl went largely ignored compared to this rather underwhelming turn.

Worst Cameo

WINNER: Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) Great fun as Django Unchained was, there's one moment that's just utterly, depressingly distracting, and that's Quentin Tarantino's cameo as an Australian slave transporter near the end of the film. His accent is terrible, he mugs about like a loon, and essentially it just pulls us out of a film that had to that point gained a pretty strong head of steam going into the finale. Though Tarantino's fate at the end of the scene is a hoot, it's little compensation for having to sit through this awkwardly forced, insistent cameo appearance. So, that's 2012 reviewed and appraised, and thanks if you've stuck with us for the long slog. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Let us know in the comments below.
