2012 Films: Best And Worst Of The Year Awards

Best Performance In A Bad Film - Actor

WINNER: Robert Pattinson (Cosmopolis) As divisive as any film released this year, Cosmopolis was a singular effort from David Cronenberg that infuriated as many people as it pleased. I am among the infuriated contingent, dismissing Cronenberg's effort as an overly literate affair that clings to the lectern while failing to engage in an interesting intellectual discussion or even entertain on a basic level. However, the one thing the film gets right is the casting of Robert Pattinson, who has largely been dismissed by many for his work as Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. Here he proves beyond all doubt that he can do visceral, brooding, adult films, though there's the sincere hope that next time he'll get some worthier material than this.

Best Performance In A Bad Film - Actress

WINNER: Rebecca Hall (Lay the Favourite) Rebecca Hall was the single bright spot in Stephen Frears' thoroughly underwhelming dramedy about sports betting. As Beth, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress who ends up becoming a gambling honcho, she runs rings around a relatively distinguished cast - including Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vince Vaughn and Joshua Jackson - to deliver the one performance in the film that actually feels worth a damn. Her character is likeable, funny and interesting, which is more than can be said for pretty much every other element of the film; we put it down to Hall's inherent likeability and excellent accent work. Like Pattinson, she needs a better role soon.
