2022 Oscars: 6 Awards They Got Right (And 6 Awards They Royally Screwed Up)

1. Wrong: CODA Wins Best Picture

King Richard/The Eyes of Tammy Faye Socars
ABC

Beat: Belfast, Don't Look Up, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

After a late surge in momentum, CODA won Best Picture and beat out the former front-runner The Power of the Dog. Was this deserved? Not a chance in hell.

CODA is a good indie drama with fantastic acting, mostly strong writing and very nice visuals, but it's also a bit slight, fairly predictable and feels too light-weight at times.

Therefore, it does feel kind of ridiculous that this was the winner out of such a strong line-up - Belfast, Drive My Car, Dune, Licorice Pizza, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story are all superior films.

Admittedly, with Best Picture winners it often feels redundant to complain about the winner not being the best nominee. For example, 2021's winner Nomadland wasn't as good as several of the other nominees but since it was still a great film, it was difficult to complain about it winning.

Having said that, with CODA that's not the case. It isn't quite a great film.

It's sad really. Several better films undeservedly lost and a strong feel-good film is now (almost certainly) going to face a backlash it doesn't really deserve for winning Best Picture over several far more memorable movies. Everyone loses.
