2022 Oscars: 6 Awards They Got Right (And 6 Awards They Royally Screwed Up)
7. Jane Campion Wins Best Director
Beat: Kenneth Branagh (Belfat), Ryusuke Hamaguichi (Drive My Car), Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) and Steven Spielberg (West Side Story).
And finally, as sad as it was to see The Power of the Dog lose not one, not two but three Oscars it should've won to a far less accomplished film, at least Jane Campion got the Oscar she deserved.
Aside from the historic nature of her win - she's the third woman to win Best Director - this was an entirely earned win in general. Her direction of The Power of the Dog was absolutely mesmerising and she made it one of the most artistic, visually glorious movies of the year.
Furthermore, The Power of the Dog is the kind of movie that really deserves this sort of Oscar. Of course, it had a great script and terrific performances too but in such a visual, imagery-based work, the director is such a vital part of making the film work and it's a truly great thing that she won.
Regarding the rest of the nominees, they were all fantastic (especially Spielberg) but none quite matched Campion and therefore, this is one of those Oscar wins that was completely deserved in every way. Those are somewhat rare, so you really love to see it!
And now for the awards they didn't quite get right...
