6. Wrong: Belfast Wins Best Original Screenplay

King Richard/The Eyes of Tammy Faye Socars
Universal

Beat: Don't Look Up, King Richard, Licorice Pizza and The Worst Person in the World.

It must immediately be said: Belfast is a great film. It occasionally feels slight, but thanks to Kenneth Branagh's eye-wateringly gorgeous directing, superb performances and a wonderful sense of heart and pathos, Belfast is an incredibly effective work that is already being underrated by some observers.

But did it deserve to win Best Original Screenplay? Not quite.

It deserved the nomination, absolutely, but it'd be hard to argue that it was more deserving of the win than Paul Thomas Anderson's superbly crafted Licorice Pizza or the the brilliantly written surprise nominee The Worst Person in the World.

It wasn't the best line-up ever, as Don't Look Up and King Richard were undeserving nominees on every conceivable level, but Belfast was still only the third-best screenplay in this category and it really should've gone to Licorice Pizza or The Worst Person in the World. It would've been particularly nice to see the latter win.
