2022 Oscars: 6 Awards They Got Right (And 6 Awards They Royally Screwed Up)
4. Jessica Chastain Wins Best Actress
Beat: Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) and Kristen Stewart (Spencer).
The Best Actress race was pretty open this year, but eventually Jessica Chastain became the front-runner and walked away with the Oscar for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. This one is one of those Oscars that, much like with (to name perhaps the most obvious example) Al Pacino's win for Scent of a Woman, this was more of a career win than anything else.
It says a lot about just how great an actress Chastain is that she's already getting a career Oscar despite only being in the mainstream for just over a decade, but unfortunately this wasn't the right year for her to win.
Although Chastain gave a fantastic performance overflowing with heart and charisma, one still feels like the performance wasn't as good as it could've been. The thing is, The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a very weak film, and probably the worst film to win an Oscar this year.
Since the screenplay is so badly put-together and since Chastain's co-star, Andrew Garfield, is so completely miscast and fails to ever match her on-screen, Chastain's performance is ultimately undermined. Penelope Cruz, Olivia Colman and Kristen Stewart all gave better performances and really, Stewart should've won for her masterpiece of a performance as Princess Diana.
