2022 Oscars: 6 Awards They Got Right (And 6 Awards They Royally Screwed Up)
5. Troy Kutsur Wins Best Supporting Actor
Beat: Ciaran Hinds (Belfast), Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), JK Simmons (Being the Ricardos) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog).
Deaf actor Troy Kotsur gave a wonderful performance in CODA and he also delivered (via an interpreter) an absolutely terrific, intensely moving speech but unfortunately, this was a case where a nomination was deserved, but not the win.
This is not to say that Kotsur didn't absolutely smash it in CODA because boy oh boy, he did, but it just so happens that he wasn't the best in the line-up.
Really, this should've gone to Kodi Smit-McPhee for his mesmerising and brilliantly ambiguous performance in The Power of the Dog. It certainly would've been great to see, for he's been delivering awesome performances ever since his break-out as a young actor in The Road and Let Me In, but prior to this he'd never quite become as well-known as he deserved to be, so this would've been such a well-earned win.
Frankly, Ciaran Hinds' heartfelt, show-stealing performance in Belfast was also superior, although Kutsor definitely deserved the Oscar more than Jesse Plemmons or JK Simmons (both were excellent, but Plemmons isn't in the movie all that much and Simmons was stuck in an underwhelming movie). Basically, it was another case of the eventual winner only being the third-best in their line-up.
