20 Recent Box Office Bombs EVERYONE Saw Coming

18. Elio

Pixar

Pixar sure has been having a rough time of it since the pandemic, as families have become more conditioned to watch animated movies at home, with only huge IP seeming to lure them back out to the multiplexes.

It tracks, then, that Inside Out 2 - Pixar's only direct sequel released since the pandemic - is also their only bonafide box office hit. With this in mind, it was easy to assume that last year's Elio would be another theatrical underperformance.

It definitely didn't help that the marketing was lacklustre and largely just painted it as another passable yet forgettable animated Disney film, rather than a stunning Pixar classic well worth taking the kids to see.

And so, even though reviews were decently positive, the $200 million animation grossed a devastating $154 million, even less than Lightyear's catastrophic $226.4 million back in 2022.

The unfortunate by-product of Pixar's original movies continuing to flop, of course, is that Disney is now incentivised to double-down on sequels and familiar IP - hence Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and Coco 2 being set for release over the next few years.
