21 Batman Movies That Almost Happened

1. George Miller'€™s Justice League: Mortal (2009)

Justice League was always an inevitability as long as Batman films were still on screen, and with the MCU expanding ever more successfully, it was only a matter of time before DC expanded their own creative territories from Dawn Of Justice into a nine picture web. But the jump to the JLA almost came a lot sooner, as Mad Max director George Miller had planned to bring a project to the big screen, in an attempt to trump Marvel's efforts to make The Avengers.

The script eventually leaked at the tail end of 2013, and the plot was to focus on the aftermath of Batman's creation of Brother Eye - a Skynet-like program that monitors the world's superheroes and offers an option to terminate them. The plot would pick up Batman's mistrust of superheroes and the threat they represent - in a very pre-Civil War thread - and it was down to other heroes - Iris Allen, The Flash, Wally West, and Superman to prove him wrong by showing him that everyone can be good.

Armie Hammer was cast as Batman, D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Common as Green Lantern, Adam Brody as The Flash, Anton Yelchin as The Flash (Wally West), Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, and Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter. Unfortunately the lesser known castings meant it was hard to connect with the film, and in January 2008, Warner Bros. announced it was on indefinite hold, officially because the script needed work, which was impossible because of the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. Eventually it shuffled off into Development Hell as a cancelled project.
