Though Christopher Nolan reinvented Two-Face and reimagined his origin as the product of Batman's botched attempt to save Rachel, he still paid homage to the the character's comic book origin story. In an introductory scene one of Sal Maroni's goons attempts to assassinate Dent, and the gun misfires, as he questions a witness about Sal Maroni. In the comics of course, Dent became Two-Face when Maroni threw acid in his face, and this was Nolan's way of nodding at the origin. Though the "real" origin was played out in Batman Forever, we almost saw it happen earlier in Batman Returns as earlier drafts of the script featured Harvey Dent who would again have been played by Billy Dee Williams. In those drafts, Dent was in the Max Shreck role (before he was to become the villain) and the finale would have Catwoman cause his scarring. She was to kiss him while holding Penguin's generator, and the plan was to have the third Burton film with Two-Face as the main villain.
