In The Dark Knight Rises, when Doctor Crane is presiding over the kangaroo court, Bane is seen sitting quietly at the back playing with a piece of twine - a slightly disarming choice that is wholly fitting with his eccentricity. But look a little deeper and the moment is actually an allusion to Dickens' "A Tale Of Two Cities", which Jonathan Nolan has admitted was a major influence of the story. In that Madame Defarge sits knitting while watching public beheadings - and the character link serves to foreshadow the tragic revelations of Bane's past, as well as explaining in some way his hatred of the upper classes.
