21 Jump Street Sequel: 4 Dos and 4 Don'ts To Make It Work

2. Don't: Go Over The Top With Action

21 Jump Street Explosions While the first film did have its share of action beats, they suited the comedic tone of the film and didn't feel the film was on auto pilot when they happened. Sequels tend to go bigger, especially in the action genre but I think a 21 Jump Street sequel, while expected to have some action, needs to keep its focus on the characters and story, the same focus that made the first one feel special. Though if they do want to go a little bigger with the action sequences, I think there's a way to combine big action set pieces with small scale storytelling. While it's a different genre of film, I would say the filmmakers should keep in mind Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, which balanced epic superhero action and relatable human drama. There were some moments of over-the-top self-indulgence in the first movie, but dialling it all up for the sequel is probably one of the worst possible outcomes for the sequel.
