21 Jump Street Sequel: 4 Dos and 4 Don'ts To Make It Work

1. Don't: Resurrect Johnny Depp

johnny-depp-1997--large-msg-120577085472 This probably won't happen anyway, but I wouldn't put it past a studio executive to want Johnny Depp's undercover agent, Tom Hanson, who was killed at the climax of the first film, to magically come back alive for a sequel. Depp's cameo worked because it was a nice send up and send off for his 21 Jump Street character. It allowed Depp to finally make peace with a show he had complicated feelings toward, and the project that made him famous and served as passing of the torch to the new characters and actors. To extend Depp's role in this new franchise beyond a cameo would feel cheap and obvious, and would offer very little creative value, unless someone has a ridiculously clever idea. And I don't mean zombies. And now, on to the things the studio SHOULD do with the sequel...
