20. Love Conquers All - The Adjustment Bureau
The Adjustment Bureau is a mostly entertaining Twilight Zone-inspired yarn about Brooklyn Congressman David Norris (Matt Damon) and a woman he meets, Elise (Emily Blunt), who changes the course of his life. However, the so-called "Adjustment Bureau" are supposed to prevent their meeting, as it deviates from "the plan", with higher-up Thompson (Terrence Stamp) arguing that free will has only harmed humanity for the most part. If David sticks to their plan, there is a strong chance he will become President of the United States, and he is warned that failure to comply will ruin both their lives. At the end of the movie, David decides to reveal all of this to Elise, and receives some help from agent Harry (Anthony Mackie). However, the pair are pursued by the Bureau, who plan to "reset" or labotomise David to prevent him speaking out any further about them, but before they are caught, the two kiss passionately. When they finish, they look around to see the pursuing agents gone, and Harry informs them that their devotion to each other caused the plan to change, and they're free to go about their lives. Why It Sucks: After a compelling set-up, a basic "love conquers all" ending feels like a massive cop-out. The "Chairman" just changes his mind and lets them live their lives? Few people were probably expecting an epic shootout climax, but this was the most boring and unimaginative resolution possible. It's the cinematic equivalent of shrugging your shoulders and saying, "Oh, alright..."
