14. The Witch (2015)
Robert Eggers' directorial debut The Witch is a horror film unlike any other, bringing its scares through scenery, imagery and slow-build tension rather than clichéd jumps and predictable twists.
Taking place in the early 1600s, the movie follows a Puritan family who begin to suffer misfortune at the hands of an unknown force near their farm. The tragedies make the family members paranoid, violent, and forces them to confront their sins whilst combatting a great evil they cannot see.
Led by Anya Taylor-Joy in her first role, The Witch is methodically made and dense with foreshadowing, unsettling images and challenging themes such as liberation, religion and the occult, all of which comes together to create a film that will knock down your defences and leave you breathless with its final twist.
