13. Hereditary (2019)

Ex Machina
A24

Before he was taking an unforgettably terrifying stab at folk horror with Midsommar, Ari Aster burst onto the scene with a debut for the ages in Hereditary, which has already gone down as one of the scariest horror movies of the last twenty years.

The story of a family wracked with guilt over the death of youngest member Charlie (Milly Shapiro), the intrusive horror quickly and violently shifts from a movie about grief and bereavement into one about possession, demons, witches and paranoia, all of which is harrowingly brought to life by Toni Collette's portrayal of matriarch Annie.

Hereditary soars with its cast, but also Aster's direction, which effortlessly creates a sense of palpable dread and mystery around every event plaguing the family. It's beyond disturbing, but you'll never want to look away.
