11. The Lobster (2015)

Ex Machina
Sony

The Lobster is set in a world where single people are sent to a hotel to find their soul mate, and if they fail they're turned into an animal of their choosing. With this bizarre concept, Yorgos Lanthimos crafted a film that's a startling imaginative feat, and a drama about free will that is surprisingly touching.

Starring Colin Farrell as a recently divorced man who forms an illegal relationship with an outsider (Rachel Weisz), the psychological drama constantly toes the line between dark comedy, twisted fantasy and romance, and blends them together into a movie that is as odd as it is bold and eccentric.

Though its strange setting and idiosyncratic tone will be off-putting for some, The Lobster begs to be seen simply because there's no film like it.
