A melodic and simple movie, First Cow concerns two troubled men with big dreams (John Magaro and Orion Lee) who band together to steal milk from a prized cow so they can sell bake goods to people in the community.
Directed by Kelly Reichardt, who has said she aims to make films about "people just passing through", First Cow is on the surface a movie about people moving from place to place, trying to find shelter, make money, and confide in each other along the way.
At once a subtle assessment of the American Dream and the idea of freedom, the drama is ultimately one about friendship, and its ambiguousness and visual beauty makes it a gorgeous and heart-wrenching sight to behold.
