7. Saint Maud (2020)
In Saint Maud, A24's best horror movie, a young devout Catholic nurse called Maud (Morfydd Clark) becomes obsessed with a patient in her care (Jennifer Ehle) and begins to question her faith, her past, and her soul as the world crumbles around her.
Brutally psychological and thick with a tense, unpredictable atmosphere, the film is methodical and eerily unsettling, pushing Maud into a pit of desperation from which there's no escape, whilst her faith falters and her patient taunts her.
Watching it, you would think Saint Maud is the work of a veteran filmmaker, but it's actually the debut of writer/director Rose Glass, whose first time behind the camera proves to be a debut of relentless scares and unforgettable twists. This one will stay with you.
