1. Room (2015)

Ex Machina
A24

Based on Emma Donohue's novel of the same name, Room is a searing portrait of a mother and her young son living in captivity and unable to see the outside world, until they finally escape and find themselves struggling to adjust to their new lives.

Harrowing in the extreme but utterly captivating thanks to the performances of an Oscar-winning Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, the drama is ambitious and tightly structured, and assesses the pain of confinement, abuse and fear with such strong emotion that you can basically feel it rushing off the screen.

Hard as it may be to watch, though, Room counters its harsh story with an optimistic undertone that makes the pair's jolting journey rewarding and almost sweet by the time it comes to an end. Simply put, Room is A24 at the height of its moviemaking powers, and shouldn't be missed.
