2. Moonlight (2016)
Split into three chapters, Moonlight follows the life of Chiron (played at different stages by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes), who throughout his life must contend with an absent mother and his own unsure identity as a gay Black man.
Written and filmed with both subtly and compassion, the drama sheds light on one man's twisting life whilst painting a vivid and vital portrait of what it means to accept yourself and others for their life choices and identity.
Soaring with Barry Jenkins' lovingly crafted script and the magnificent performances of Trevante Rhodes, Mahershalla Ali, Naomi Harris and Janelle Monáe, Moonlight isn't just one of A24's best features, but an important Best Picture Oscar winner for the ages.
