20. Krisha (2015)

Ex Machina
A24

Like many A24 films, Krisha is a brutally hard film to watch, and requires a lot of patience and emotional control to tackle. It follows its eponymous character (Krisha Fairchild) as she slips back into her past addictions and clashes with her family.

Those this write-up makes the drama feel like a fairly cut-and-dry tale of family woes and addiction, director Trey Shults uses a genre-bending, experimental and almost hypnotic approach to telling Krisha's story, making her the centre of attention whilst placing her family into positions of compassion and anger around her.

Compassionate, strange and ultimately heartbreaking, Krisha tells a simple story with unforgettable execution, and the results will stay with you long after its haunting final shot.
