18. A Ghost Story (2017)

Ex Machina
A24

David Lowery's minimalist drama about mortality, grief and time's healing touch is one of A24's quietest heartbreakers, following a woman (Rooney Mara) as she deals with the death of her husband (Casey Affleck) as his ghost watches from a distance.

Haunting and meditative, A Ghost Story is both subtle and may admittedly be too odd for some, but thanks to Lowery's observational filmmaking and Mara's restrained performance, it packs an emotional punch that is hard to shake. Watching the ghost witness his wife grieving is nothing short of crushing.

Even the infamous five-minute pie-eating scene is a powerful testament to Lowery's vision, reflecting the film's relationship with time in both a literal and unique way. It's melodic, sad, and brilliant, and unlike anything out there.
