24 Confirmed New Disney Films (& 24 Rumoured) Coming 2020-27

2024...

4. Star Wars 2

Star Wars Benioff and Weiss
Lucasfilm

Release Date: 20th December, 2024

We come to the next Star Wars film on the slate, the details of which will depend on a) what the 2022 film is, and b) Disney's release strategy. Since they have two trilogies in development, there's logic in thinking that they'll split them up, i.e. if we get Benioff & Weiss' first movie in '22, then this will be Rian Johnson's first, or vice versa.

On the other hand, trying to break up a trilogy with other movies ultimately hurt Disney with Solo, and while there were a multitude of factors for that, they might feel better off just focusing on one trilogy, meaning this would likely be the second instalment of Benioff & Weiss' series, which is expected to be set during the Old Republic.

2025...

3. Avatar 4

Avatar Jake Neytiri
Fox

Release Date: 19th December, 2025

It's incredibly bold of Disney to release these dates so far into the future when franchises can crumble on the back of a single poorly received sequel. But then a couple of billion at the global box office for the original is probably strong enough evidence to just give James Cameron whatever he wants.

Then again, despite them appearing on this slate, there's no actual concrete confirmation that this and its follow-up WILL be made. As Cameron said as recently as 22017: "Let's face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don't make enough money, there's not going to be a 4 and 5". And then actor David Thewlis said similarly in early 2018: "they're making 2 and 3, they're gonna see if people go and see them, and then they'll make 4 and 5."

If you're a big fan of blue people, cross your fingers on the first two doing well.
