19. The Long Walk

Release: ???? Status: Somewhere in Frank Darabont's mental queue. Frequent King adapter Darabont currently owns the rights to this thriller that meshes The Hunger Games and all those walking bits in the Hobbit. He's said he will "get to it one day" and will make it low-budget, "weird, existential, and very self contained". The story - which doesn't really sing adaptability really - is set in a dystopian future in which the government makes 100 teenage boys walk until they all die apart from one. Like the Running Man, except without fighting, Christmas-tree-lit opera warriors and the running. Prospects: Whether it will even get released remains to be seen, and it's likely to be a relentlessly grim affair when it eventually makes it out. But if there's anyone who should be trusted with a King adaptation it's Darabont.
