4. Everest (48%)
Predicted Critical Consensus: "A visually stunning account of a real-life survival story, Everest nevertheless buries its talented cast beneath a wealth of disaster movie cliches." The surprisingly low $65 million budget for a star-studded, effects-heavy film like Everest means one of two things: it's either extremely streamlined and lacks the excessive bloat of similar survival blockbusters, or it's been done on the cheap and will look a little ropey. The relatively inconsistent CGI from the trailers suggests more of the latter than the former being true here, but at the same time, the sheer personality of the actors involved and the true life story should do enough to win it some fans. Others, though, will undeniably take umbrage with a true story where many lost their lives being turned into a 3D extravaganza. With twice Oscar-nominated writer William Nicholson (Shadowlands, Gladiator) and Oscar-winning scribe Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) working on the screenplay, however, there's every chance it could overcome the trappings of the genre to deliver something truly visceral and inspiring.
