Why You Forgot: Several years after the release of del Toro's Cronos - a solid first feature film that showcased early on the director's knack for horror - Mimic hit theaters and didn't quite take the world by storm. Despite being effectively creepy in some places, the film doesn't necessarily scream for repeat viewings and the final theatrical product was one that even del Toro himself was unsatisfied with. 

As such, no one would fault you being surprised to discover that Mimic spawned two further - and lesser - sequels in 2001 and 2003. Reedus popped up briefly in the original 1997 film, but went on to find cult fame two years later as Murphy MacManus in The Boondock Saints and has earned widespread recognition in recent years as Daryl Dixon on a little show called The Walking Dead.
