Beat: Pedro Almodovar (Talk to Her), Stephen Daldry (The Hours), Rob Marshall (Chicago) and Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York).

Should've Won: Pedro Almodovar.

Alright, this one is in a completely different ballpark to the other Oscar wins on this list.

This win shouldn't have happened not because Roman Polanski didn't direct The Pianist brilliantly, because he absolutely did. This win should never have taken place because, as it should've gone without saying, a man like Roman Polanski should never, ever win an Oscar.

There have been many low-points in the history of the Oscars, but awarding Best Director to a man who is known to have drugged and raped a young girl (and other women have made similar accusations against him too) and has never actually faced justice is really up there.

To put it very, very gently, this was absolutely f**king disgusting on every possible level and it's enough to make you hate the Oscars for life.

To those who think Will Smith hitting Chris Rock was the ugliest Oscars moment ever, just watch the clip of the audience (including several who publically supported the #MeToo movement later on) standing and applauding at Roman Polanski's win - that puts things in perspective. It's a stomach-churning viewing, especially since you can see Harvey Weinstein in one shot, looking rather pleased about it.
