25 Best Directors In The World Right Now

10. Steven Spielberg

Most Recent Film: Lincoln (2012) Next Film: Bridge Of Spies (2015) Best Film: Schindler's List (1993) Oh, it's easy to write off Steven Spielberg as a relic of a forgotten era. "He's too sentimental," they say. "He's way past his prime," they say. "What good has he done in recent years?" they say. But there's little evidence to support any of these criticisms - especially when they deride a master filmmaker who continues to thrive into the 21st century, in which he's made some of his best pictures to date. The pace may have slackened somewhat, but what do you expect? Has the man not earned the right to a more relaxed existence? Let's not forget that in 2012 there was Lincoln, a movie that only Spielberg could have rendered so successfully - it was the work of an old master. Not one resting on his laurels, mind, but one who has learned and studied his craft to such an extent that something like Lincoln comes off so easily; a film of natural talent. Steven Spielberg has a new film out this year, Bridge Of Spies, starring none other than Tom Hanks. It looks poised to be great in all the ways that Spielberg movies often are. And now that they come less often, we should appreciate them when they do. Not that laziness seems to be on the cards; the director appears to be mounting a new period of productivity and has no less than two films in development: Ready Player One and The BFG. Yes!
