23. The Trip
MGM
The Drug: LSD If you've ever wondered what kind of film a drug-addled Jack Nicholson would write, then look no further than The Trip, the wonderfully campy psychedelic curiosity directed by Roger Corman, starring Peter Fonda as a man heartbroken by the divorce from his adulterous wife and Dennis Hopper as his drug dealer. The Trip's visuals certainly come across as cliched now, but this is a testament to how much this early cult classic has influenced those who followed, establishing a number of well-worn cinematic tropes and techniques used to represent the mind under the influence of LSD. It might look cheap and tacky in parts and has been criticised for allegedly sugar coating and simplifying the acid experience, but there's plenty of fun to be had, and it's interesting to see Fonda and Hopper together in a drug-themed movies just a few years before they'd go on to make one of the most significant drug movies of all time - Easy Rider.
