A festival darling that was screened at Cannes, The Transfiguration is the feature debut from writer-director Michael O’Shae that follows troubled teenager Milo (Eric Ruffin) who believes himself to be a real-life vampire. Living in a rough New York neighbourhood where he’s constantly harassed by a local gang, Milo eventually befriends the equally troubled Sophie (Chloë Levine).

Described as a blend between Moonlight and Twilight by critic Robbie McCallum, O’Shae’s film is a bleak outing that uses the vampire genre as a means to tell a hard-hitting coming-of-age story about two youths searching for their identities within their grim situations.

While the slow-burn pacing of this film won’t appeal to some audiences, the grounded depiction of vampirism of a character who may or may not even be a “real” vampire makes for a fascinating watch before the ending thoroughly crushes you in the best possible way.
