25 Best Werewolf Movies Ever Made
14. Brotherhood Of The Wolf
A martial arts, swashbuckling fantasy, period drama, mystery, action, horror film, based on a true story, Brotherhood Of The Wolf is basically every imaginable genre of werewolf movie thrown in a blender all together.
A version of the story of the Beast Of GĂ©vaudan, a real-life animal or animals responsible for hundreds of violent attacks on people in the south of France in the 1760s, the creature in Brotherhood Of The Wolf is perhaps not technically a werewolf. Nevertheless the giant armoured mythical wolf creature under the control of Vincent Cassel's flamboyant silver-bullet-toting aristocrat and the titular brotherhood is a definite riff on classic werewolf tropes and themes.
The story, in which a naturalist and his Iroquois sidekick seek to capture the beast on behalf of the King of France, is a convoluted mess of different melodramatic twists and turns. But Christophe Gans, for whom this landed a job on the similarly stylish but nonsensically plotted Silent Hill, directed with flair and style.
The result is an action costume drama that looks amazing and is a lot of fun even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
