25 Best Werewolf Movies Ever Made
13. The Wolfman
Costing around $150 million, Universal's 2010 remake of the classic Wolf Man (although this time with the title all as one word) was by some margin the most expensively ambitious attempt to make the humble werewolf into blockbuster movie fare. Bombing at the box office, it also turned out to be one of the studio's most costly failures.
And let's be fair, the new Wolfman has an unengaging story and, even with an impressive cast that includes Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, the characters are two dimensional. But even so, and despite a troubled production and multiple delays, the film does not entirely deserve to be such a failure.
If nothing else, every bit of that enormous budget is up there on screen and the look and design of the movie shows just what a high budget gothic monster picture could achieve. While several werewolf movies stumble on the fact that it's hard not to make a wolfman look a little silly, here the practical effects are exceptional, winning monster veteran Rick Baker an impressive seventh Best Makeup Oscar.
After several further abortive attempts, Universal have recently announced a new version of the Wolfman (or Wolf Man) story with Ryan Gosling in the lead. Hopefully that one will fare a little better.
