16. The Big Twist - Jason Bourne

Easily the strangest and most disappointing thing about Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is the mid-film reveal that his father was in fact killed by the very same Asset (Vincent Cassel) who is chasing him down in the present.

When Bourne first catches sight of the Asset, it's revealed that Bourne recognises him from his dad's assassination years earlier, in a highly contrived plot twist that honestly feels like it belongs nowhere near the relatively grounded, "realistic" movies in this franchise.

Plus, it strips all the moral ambiguity away from the scenario. The Asset had a personal vendetta against Bourne because his whistleblowing caused his cover to be compromised and he was nearly killed.

To have him be the killer of Bourne's father as opposed to some anonymous assassin feels like a lame attempt to level the moral playing field and turn the Asset into a more generic villain. What a shame, because Cassel absolutely owned the role.

Maybe if series writer Tony Gilroy had penned the script, this wouldn't have happened.
